We decided to check this place out to see if it might be a valid/certified Soul Food Joint.

I’m a Louisiana native, and like a moth to a flame, I am always trying the newest Louisiana-themed places around here. I had very little faith in one opening up in Livermore, but this is LEGIT. Everything is cooked with love and it tastes so good. It’s great to see a family-run restaurant that really delivers good soul food! And they are friendly and gracious!

I am a huge fan of traditional soul food. Especially Louisiana soul food. But, unfortunately I couldn’t get that here. The hot links were store bought, the Cole slaw appeared to be store bought with what tasted like Lighthouse brand Cole slaw dressing. A previous review said that the mac n cheese tasted like Stouffers, yeah maybe if you watered down the Stouffers until it had no flavor. I had high hopes for a family run business stating its roots were in Louisiana, but from my many trips to New Orleans I have never had food like this. So far, the best soul food I’ve had in the area was at Southern Comfort Kitchen in Castro Valley. Much more worth the drive to get and at about the same price point. It’s not often I feel like I didn’t get my money’s worth in any way from a restaurant, but, unfortunately St. Johns left me feeling short changed. By the way, I also bought lunch for my co-worker, who is actually from the south and his review was even worse than mine. He stated that after tasting it, the only reason he would eat it was so that I hadn’t wasted my money. Oh yeah, I also ordered and payed for 2 side orders of hush puppies which according to their menu and receipt is 5 per order. I received 4 hush puppies total. 2 in each plate. I should have realized something was up when I walk into a restaurant at peak lunch period (noon) and there are only two people in the place.

FINALLY SOME GOOD SOUL FOOD IN LIVERMORE!!! Today was my first time trying this joint and the young lady who helped me is so kind and welcoming. For my first time there i had a lot of questions and having not ate all day I couldn’t make up my mind on what to order lol everything looked and sounded so good. The young lady was very patient with me; a huge thank you to her!! I wish I had got her name :/ she was so helpful but I ordered the Beef Brisket with potato salad and Macaroni ‘N Cheese as my sides and I added on a chicken wing as a side order which was omg so juicy, crispy and flavorful!!! Can’t go wrong with it honestly! It was my first time ever trying beef brisket and it was so tender, juicy and full of flavor!! As for my sides I absolutely loved their Macaroni ‘N Cheese it was literally made to perfection!! Every bite was hella comforting! The Potato Salad was also hella good and fresh it was not no store bought salad thank God!! You can tell everything by the taste and flavor of it is homemade. I also got a side order of their hush puppies which was really nice and cripsy… Now I originally wanted their hot links but they were all pork, the kind lady said they will have other meat options for their links soon so I’ll definitely be back forsure for that and I also wanna try to make room for their dessert next time.. Thank you St. John’s for the amazing food and service!!

I had the seafood gumbo with no chicken and was so happy that Debra accommodated my pescatarian diet! The shrimp melted in my mouth. Delicious!
