My friend and I wanted to find a great restaurant to eat at because we both are foodies. When we were deciding on the place to eat, Roots Ocean Prime in Princeton addressed both of our distance, food pallets and curiosity. The chopped salad was very filling. I liked the shrimp scampi’s presentation. While the salmon dinner with asparagus was common, I am told my friend’s scallop and bacon dinner was out of this world. For the first time I tried a raspberry meal. It was very good. The best part of our dining experience was the dessert. The butter cake with blueberry compote and whip cream is the item that I wish to return to the restaurant just to eat.

A last hour trip to Princeton ended up delightfully memorable, one reason was the excellent service and fine, affordable meal here.. Funny too because visiting at all was a chance happening. I booked a reservation for just after 8pm late afternoon on a busy Friday since other downtown Witherspoon restaurants were all booked up. My companion and I had tried a few of those more than once and find them a reliable go to, but it was nice trying a new place (also near the Dinky train which takes us to the NJ transit Princeton Jct station, so we didn’t need to bother with renting a car having come from NYC). And though appearing more upscale than we felt we were dressed for (a little on the casual side-I in sneakers and cargo pants for walking the canal and doing some local nature exploring), they kindly served us without batting a judgmental eye.

Overall an enjoyable dinner. We ordered steaks (ribeye and NY strip) plus fries and asparagus. Nothing exceptional but really good cuts and very tender meat. My ribeye was more like a filet!

We celebrated a family engagement and they went above and beyond to make it more special. The menus had their names on it. The rose petals on the table and of course the amazing food and great customer service. Highly recommend!

This place was a disappointment. We made a reservation for 2 adults and a 1 year old. They were totally fine with the reservation (could have warned us!) bit when we asked for a high chair, they said they don’t provide. And with a weird facial expression from the hostess! Tell us after you receive the reservation if kids/infants are not welcomed and we would at least know. Moreover, we got seated in some remote corner of the restaurant away from the crowd. I felt bad for my husband who had wanted to try the place for a while. So we ordered wine and some appetizers. Everything was good but of course the experience was subpar while trying to make sure our 1yo doesn’t run away ♀️ I should have checked the reviews, some people mentioned this. We never got to try any of the steaks as we had to leave before main course ♀️

The food and service were superb. The atmosphere was a bit noisy, but still pleasing. The cowboy steak was hefty and flavorful. The Brussels sprouts were delicious. The shrimp and bacon appetizers were sinful, savory, and salty. The scallops and bacon appetizers were sweet, salty, and luscious. The warm butter cake was a nice finish.
