I was very excited to return here after being away for a few years. Unfortunately, it was not what I remembered. I know times have been difficult for the restaurant industry since covid, but if you are going to charge high end prices the food should be on par. It was not. It was not bad, it was just not what a restaurant of this caliber should be serving. Table cloths were wrinkled, like they were sitting on a pile somewhere, and service was slow. I hope they are able to improve.

I honestly wanted to give this a higher rating, but a few things killed it for me. First off the actual entrees and the appetizer were good. However, the sides were very weak and my wife’s side was initially wrong and felt like the correct sides were just thrown together very quickly as it was oily and bland. The other major hit was price. I just can’t comprehend the pricing on the entrees. The appetizers, drinks and desserts I believe are all fairly priced. However $40 for an entree!?!?!? It better be perfect and these were far from it. We had the pork chops, lamb chops and salmon and felt each fell way below what we were expecting at that price point. If you come, I would only come for appetizers or drinks.

Was passing through Blacksburg on a work trip, decided to stop in at the Black Hen for a drink. The highlight of my visit was definitely the bartender (young blonde, can’t remember her name. I apologize.) Super knowledgeable on the wine menu and local beers. Restaurant was moderately busy, and I believe she said she was a manager as well, as she was helping two other gentlemen carry plates among other things all the while taking excellent care of me at the bar. Ended up staying for a couple appetizers. Hidden gem with great service and good beers. Will be coming back if I’m ever in the area again.

I’m only giving the restaurant 2 stars because of our experience, not our food quality. A couple of weeks ago, a friend and I ate dinner here. The food and cocktails were excellent, however we only hate about 60% of our food. We wanted to box up the rest of our food to take home. Our waiter insisted on doing this for us, but he came back 5 minutes later saying he accidentally threw it away. Whether he did, or someone in the kitchen did, and he took the blame, we don’t know. However, we were given free dessert when we should have been offered a percentage off of our food! After all, 40% of it was wasted. We also asked for fresh ground pepper and were given a pepper shaker. Our waiter was also on his phone at the host stand, which I have never seen at this type of restaurant before. For this price point and type of restaurant, the staff and ownership need to be more attentive to what’s going on and the quality of service they’re providing. We won’t be coming back.

This is a wanna-be upscale restaurant that is not quite there. The ambiance is lakeside cabin-ish, and the food is ok, but not great. The restaurant-made dressing on my caesar dressing was underwhelming, and the croutons were stale. My filet was undercooked medium-rare, and the garlic potatoes and broccoli (also undercooked) was just ok. My husband was not impressed with his salmon. I watched the bartender do several unsanitary things without washing his hands, and the pours are skimpy. I cannot recommend.
