Feeling nostalgic for good old fashioned comfort food? How about a slice of pie to go with that meal? If so, check out Cowans! I had their Reubens and it was delicious! I topped it off with a slice of apple pie and I was in heaven. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable of their menu. The place was clean and has daily specials. Check them out and support local!

A family diner in the heart of the historic, downtown Washington riverfront. This is not where you go for a high-end experience, so if you go expecting culinary delights you will be disappointed. But for a diner it is a true gem. Great breakfast served all day, and some very good, comfort food options for the entire family. The service is excellent. Small town place where there are lots of friendly faces. “Mile high” pies are tempting and definitely tasty. Homemade biscuits are a local favorite. If they have the pork cutlet with gravy on the menu, this one rivals your Grandmothers recipe and definitely worth a try.

Update: 5/27/2023, The pie is still delicious. I tried the bbq pork steak dinner this time. While the coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, and the biscuit was fantastic, the pork steak was just average. It wasn’t very tender and not a lot of flavor.

Stopped in to eat breakfast food for a late lunch. I have to say the breakfast sandwich was exceptional. The biscuit was fluffy and the sausage patty was clearly not of the premade frozen variety. The hash browns were not my cup of tea, but I don’t prefer the shredded type anyways. I also got a few bites of the ham steak and it was juicy and tender. Last but not least was a slice of the peach crumble pie. I can understand why Cowan’s is known for their pie. It was a massive slice and enough for two people to share. Every bite was good including the crust around the edge.

The corn nuggets were good but fried cauliflower with cheese had no cheese. The fried chicken, German potato salad, chicken strip , biscuits, Mac n cheese were delicious, mash potatoes and gravy were to salty and the lies were Amazing! We will come back

I usually have at least a couple of little flaws to share about the establishments I visit because I want to be helpful towards people traveling so they know what to expect (keeping in mind that restaurant workers sometimes have bad days, so only when it’s something pretty serious). But this place? I was totally blown away. The menu has a very flavorful end unique selection.

To their credit, I should have noticed the help wanted sign in their window.

Went here during a big thunderstorm. Place was a bit empty but the food was good and the staff was courteous. Minor complaint. Didn’t love the eggs wish they were softer scrambled.
