The River Star Diner experience was OK, and here is why. This diner had plenty of seating in the front and side of the restaurant, however I was seated way in the back side where nobody was. The waitress was ok as she checked on me once after receiving my order. I ordered a pizza burger which was titled as a Parmesan Burger. The burger was ok but did lack good mozzarella cheese. The fries were good but unsalted. The location appeared clean and I did receive my meal in a timely matter. Being in the back, and not seeing much of my server, I wasn’t able to order a refill of my drink as well as wait a bit much after finishing my meal to get the bill. It didn’t feel much of the Jersey diner that I am used to.

I’m a long-time customer here~ I love the updated menu, and service is just as good with the new hires! The only downside to our most recent visit was grabbing a copy of “Our Town” from the front of the restaurant to read, and finding that the entire front page was dedicated to the editor’s anti-transgender opinion piece… shared during the holiday season, no less. I’m not sure if the owner is aware of the content of this paper, but offering guests such hateful rants to peruse over their meals is distasteful at least, and promoting social division against a group within our community at best. I hope they seriously reconsider their distributed reading materials, especially since I don’t think it was intentionally provided. That being said, other than this harmful use of free speech having a platform here, the diner is just as reliable and homey as ever for us to visit, and I recommend ordering items from the Greek menu!

I would give this diner one star based on my experience with the manager at the register. I would give zero stars for service based on my experience with him as well. However, the servers at the diner are always friendly and on the ball. So I have no complaints with any of them. They are all lovely women and work hard. The food is hit or miss, depending on what you order. However, I have received BID BUCKS as a gift twice now in the past year. Twice I have tried to use them at this diner as they are listed as a participating BID business.. The first time a young man at the register wasn’t sure how to use them, so he had to call a few people. He finally entered it into the register and we left happy customers…This Saturday night we could’ve chosen any restaurant on the list that took these cards. We chose the diner as it’s a little something we do on Saturday night once in a while. The manager refused to take the cards. I explained to him that the diner is on the list of participating facilities. He cursed out the BID, first stating that he has to pay $1200 a year to them, and then stated he has to pay $1500 a year to them… And then proceeded to tell me that they “don’t do $hit for him”. I found this to be unprofessional. You are arguing with a customer, using foul language, and refusing to take some thing that clearly you participate in. He said he had called them and told them to take his name off the list. However, the diner is printed on the new list, which we just received. I understand he may not want to participate and his “beef” is with the BID, not me. He also stated I’m not the first to come in there with these cards. So, apparently, he has turned other people away as well rather than resolve this with the BID themselves. He said he was going to call them on Monday to basically give them a piece of his mind. Obviously, these BID bucks can be turned in for “real money”…. What he could have done was accept the cards, and when he spoke with the BID on Monday, ask them how he turns the “bucks” into real money for his restaurant… But rather than do that, he stood there and made me get out my debit card, pay for my meal, and leave with my BID BUCKS, (and this was after swearing, and getting angry with me, as though it were my fault that he and Hackettstown BID don’t see eye to eye)… For this reason, unfortunately, we won’t be going back after many many years of patronage to Riverstar Diner. Such a shame.

This is a very nice diner with delicious food! I used to eat here very often back in 2017 with a special person to me, and I have fond memories eating here. This is my first time back since then. I had a lunch here today on 03/20/2022. The food was just as yummy as it was in 2017!

If you’ve been to one diner in New Jersey and remember that as the quintessential experience, this one actually fits that bill. Food was good. Service was OK. It is a diner. They have 50+ options on the menu so don’t expect specialization in any one type of cuisine.

This is a diner, as such, they have an extensive menu. I’ve been eating here for quite a few years. The food is good, prices are reasonable and the service is good.
