For a place called Grandma’s I was expecting something better.

Went to Grandma’s Kitchen with my dad before visiting someone at Mayo. This place offered just what we were looking for: home-cooked, real food. We both ordered the Roast Beef Opened-Faced Sandwich-however, I got the half portion which is pictured.

Usually hot beef and mashed potato sandwiches and hot turkey/mashed potato sandwiches are my “comfort food” go-to in the winter when it’s cold out, but I was really craving one the other nite so I went to GRANDMA’S, where, depending on how hungry you are, can order either a 1/2 sandwich or a whole, a very nice option to have…It was a Fri. nite, and the place was pretty busy, but the friendly staff always find time to greet and seat you..Sudati found me a table quickly and before I knew it Allison was there to take my order…less then 5 minutes later I was “digging in”…Tender pieces of shredded roast beef topped with a massive scoop of mashed potatoes and covered in beef gravy..I topped it off with an ice cold glass of milk…Allison offered me they’re signature dessert which is a piece of pie, and as great as it is, I was going to have trouble walking out as it was, I was so full, so I had to decline…This time! In summary, a great local place to go, take the family, eat, and get VERY FULL!

I have been going to this restaurant for the past months while getting treated at the hospital. The food is perfect and the restaurant is clean. Tell the waitresses what you can and can’t eat and they would follow the instructions. Workers will go above and beyond to make sure you have everything you asked for.

The smaller restaurants are always the best food. I had their t-bone steak. I never get one at a little restaurant. It was very good. Not a very thick steak, but it was cooked very well.

The service here is fantastic but the food isn’t good at all. The bacon comes out like glass, the eggs are dripping in butter/oil, the gravy has very little flavor or sausage, the biscuits are under done and absolutely nothing is seasoned, no salt or pepper is added before it comes out. It’s a struggle to know how to tip because the wait saff are amazing but the food is less satisfying than a quick trip sandwich.

Grandma’s kitchen has been in Rochester as long as I can remember, and there’s a reason for that…well, a couple of reasons actually…sure, a consistently friendly staff is one of them,

This is the only greasy spoon diner left in Rochester, MN. Brings me back to the ’70’s where you walked in, were greeted and told sit where you want. Booths, counter and tables to choose from. Breakfast all day with specials as well. The regulars are spread about the dining area and are welcoming to newcomers. Food is what you would expect by the grill man running the kitchen. The only thing that is missing is the blue haze of the cigarette smoke, but that is okay by me. Definitely an awesome spot for all things a diner might provide. Not a fine dining experience but always great comfort food.

Local diner with a small town feel since 1977. No frills, dated interior offers a lunch counter, tables on one side and a narrow run of booths on the other. One wall commemorates the lives of Korean War veterans and other such memorabilia. Susan, waitress of 41 years, made our dining out an even more enjoyable experience. My Grandma’s Club Sandwich came with crisp bacon, thick ham, chunky, sliced turkey, fresh lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise served on toasted whole wheat. My wife’s chicken melt came with a grilled chicken breast with melted cheddar, tomato, lettuce on a toasted bun. Pickles, mayo/ranch and thin French fries on the side. A large menu offers made from scratch, home cooking for breakfast, lunch and supper. Plenty of pie options, sweets and ice cream treats.
