Came in and ordered 2 rolls and both were awesome. Always order deep-fried California rolls because everyone has their own spin to it, but also got Godzilla. The fry on both was great. Light and crisp. Service was great. Couple of separate vendors came in and the owner and server accommodated both. The atmosphere was light…very small space but perfect for one or two people.

My husband went there for a pick-up for a customer, it was about 9:30 pm dark out. A young latina lady came out the back and asked “how can I help you?” And he told her he was there for a pick-up, she told him “about three more minutes and if he could wait outside”. Mine you there are no seats outside, it’s dark but there were empty seats inside…hmmmm. Why? He is a customer too, even if picking up food, we could be potential furture customers but not with service like this. Also If he was there to pick-up his own food for himself would you ask him to wait outside???

Kansai is pretty great. They have really friendly and accommodating service, and the food is tasty. Nice cozy spot for dinner. Kansai is a good spot if you want massive sushi rolls, definitely the largest ones I have had in the downtown Hayward area. My feedback is that what gets topped on the rolls often comes out tasting pretty similar- as in, if you get a roll with salmon or tuna, hamachi etc.. the flavor is a lot the same due to similar toppings, sauces, etc in use. Resultingly, I think this restaurant is the perfect spot for if you want sushi but want a bunch of other items to go with it. I have had the karaage here which is crunchy and tasty, and the takoyaki which is different from ones I have had before. The takoyaki are bigger than a traditional one and have a crunchy exterior as opposed to the soft, doughy pancake-type batter I am used to. Nonetheless, it was pretty tasty! Apps are generally served with orange and yellow daikon- which can or can’t work depends, such as I think lemon is a better pairing with karaage.

Ordered crockets but there were more like Indian taste with tumeric or smth, rather than Japanese, still delicious but wanted japanese ones! The sushi were also ok, got disappointed with spicy sushi as there were lots of mayonnaise and I couldn’t taste anything else. The miso soup was tasty.

Lunch review: Definitely get the bento box! I chose the chicken options and omg the portions were hella huge. I swear it was enough for 2 meals and with the lunch special it was pretty cheap too. Besides that everything was pretty average–the sashimi was alright and the chicken was a bit dry. I’d come back tho just because it was such a deal haha.

Great sushi for reasonable prices give the pandemic. This is a very small restaurant with two 2 person tables in the front and maybe four or five more 2-4 person tables in the main area. Free parking a block around the corner for the shopping area.
