Mizlala used to be a wonderful and unique gem of a restaurant. After they overhauled their entire menu and changed everything that gave their restaurant it’s unique identity and aggressively particular flavors, I was saddened and discouraged from going back. Despite widespread belief, great food in LA county is rare, and this was an exception. I finally ventured to try out the new menu in hopes the food still had it’s familiar brilliance, but alas, my fears were confirmed. The food isn’t bad, don’t get me wrong. But it’s no longer special.

(The chairs are hard so if you’re coming with someone who might need it, maybe bring their seat cushion! This was the first thing our party of 6 each individually remarked on) The people are nice, the place is very pretty, and the food is great. I’ve been obsessed with recreating their herb salad that they serve on the side on a lot of their dishes.

4.5 stars – delicious sharable plates yet small portions for price. Identity of the food seems to be a pan-middle Eastern mix of Israeli, Moroccan, Turkish, and etc. dishes. All the dishes were enhanced by sauces and fresh herbs that was paired with the plates. Hummus masabacha was great because it was served with fresh laffa bread. The Jerusalem chopped salad was very simple and lacked distinctive flavor beyond the cucumber and tomato. Albeit small portions, the lamb Kefta kebab and spicy Merguez sausage were delicious and served with fresh dill and cilantro (be aware I believe the sausage has cayenne pepper that added a kick). Vegetable couscous was tasty in a tomato base served with eggplant and red bell peppers. The skillet haloumi was flambé tableside with brandy and was fun to watch (plus fried cheese is always a crowd pleaser). The restaurant automatically adds a 14% service gratuity in the bill. Service was friendly yet at times slow. Parking lot in the back charges $1 an hour at metered spaces (credit cards okay).
