Vincent DePhilippis Born in New York NY, raised in Naples Italy returned to New York City at the age of 18. Vincent DePhilippis and Madeleine Manfredi from Nimes France met in New York NY (Mamma and Papa) married in 1925, then settled in Westchester Pennsylvania. Then moved to San Diego in 1947 where they opened an Italian market named Cash & Carry Italian foods on India Street in San Diego. 1950 was the beginning of what has become a very successful line of family restaurants that are today know as Filippi’s Pizza Grottos that are owned and operated by original family members of the founders. Wow! What a gem of a restaurant! It was a beautiful day and I was lucky enough to score patio seating. The server was fabulous (Tina I believe?) she made sure I had all the things I needed! The pizza crust was good, but it was the massive amounts of cheese and toppings that were my favorite! The sauce is a bit sweeter than I’m used to, but it could have been from the pineapple topping. Either way it was delicious and saucy, the way I like ‘em! I will definitely return and try some of the other options because they looked delicious on yje nearby tables!

Filippi’s is a MUST when visiting the Little Italy neighborhood of San Diego – they’ve been around since the 1950s for a reason! I love the authenticity of the restaurant from the original building to the decor to the entry market that sells authentic Italian groceries. Not to mention the food is absolutely delicious and the service is always reliable! When you come here, you best come HUNGRY! We always start with the fresh garlic bread and house salad. The garlic bread is literally a full baguette smothered in garlic and butter – my mouth is literally watering right now just thinking about that bread! My Husband ordered his favorite Margherita pizza, which depending on where you’re sitting, you get to see made fresh to order in their open kitchen area and is so delicious. I ordered the eggplant parmigiana with ravioli as my pasta – HOLY SMOKES IT WAS GOOD! Like I said before, you must come hungry to Filippi’s because the portions are large enough to share. You won’t be disappointed!

We were seated outside with awesome people watching and an outdoor heater to keep us comfortable. We enjoyed dining family style with a big pizza, lasagna, salad, and bread sticks. All were excellent. They were really busy but our server was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive despite the crowd. The bread sticks alone are worth coming here for. Hope to be back!

A cool Italian place. The flavor of the food is lacking. My wife makes a better sauce than this place. The sausage was dry and crumbly. Waaaay to much sauce on anything that takes sauce!

This place is inside a store and that’s pretty cool. We got the pick 2 Ravioli and Lasagna with meatball and sausage. The lasagna was amazing. But the sauce was just to much for me. My meatball was huge but flavor less and the sausage was mushy like over cooked in the Boling water. 3 stars for now but will come back and see if it was a just an off day or not.

This place was very cute! The service was good but the waitress didn’t seem as though she really wanted to provide recommendations on their best sellers or what to order. We ordered thin margarita pizza and it was awesome! We also ordered the small antipasto which was enough for two people. It was an experience but I am not sure if we would go back. We would definitely snag a sub from the deli/market.

I’m rating this restaurant based on my most recent visit. I’ve been here before and had a better time and food. The restaurant is very charming and cozy, and has a very great and cute Italian market inside. with 5 different ambiences, 4 inside and 1 outside, there was still a short waiting line, but tones of empty table, so they are clearly short on staff, which also affected our server, which couldn’t be much attentive. We ordered pizza, which I’m usually a fan, but this time wasn’t as great as the others. The cheese on the pizza is delicious and they add a great amount, but the toppings were mediocre and not much added to our pizza. Points for having parmesan cheese at the table.

Back in the day, 15+years ago, this place was my fav’ Wanted to try them again to see if they still hold. Had the peppe+mushroom pizza, Xtra cheese, Xtra Peppe. Not the same as I remember it. Mainly I feel the dough has changed, as well as the size of the pizza. That being said, the cheese is great, the price is right, but not as good as I remember it. Maybe it’s been too long.

Everytime we have family visiting we end up coming to Filippi’s. It’s such an authentic and family friendly atmosphere. The food is good, although just based on quality I’d choose some of the more upscale options in Little Italy. That said, this place just has charm. From the moment you walk in to the grocery through the whole dining experience, you’ll be glad you ate here. I recommend the margherita pizza with pizza sauce and all beef meatballs.

There is a store with everything for a gourmet home cook (My friend gave me a gift of their clam sauce for when I next prepare clams). (I also had a delicious sangria, which my MD says I can have ONLY for special occasions!) We ate on the patio, which is a real treat in Little Italy! It was very hot, but the breezes off the ocean and the table umbrella kept us cool, calm, and collected! ✔️ Try it! You’ll love it! ❤️
