Even in a town with lots of good ‘que (The OG Sonny’s, G’ville institution David’s, 4 Rivers, Leaning Pig, Adam’s Rib Co, etc), Top Hog finds a space. Not just the standard BBQ favs, but lots of new twists: brisket melt, brisket French dip, 4 Pigs and a Cow, BBQ Cuban, etc. Lots of great sides, but my wife says the cheesy grits are the best! Also, DO NOT MISS the amazing bread pudding for dessert! Live music on Fridays and good daily lunch specials too!

What can I say other than absolutely delicious! If you haven’t been there yet I highly recommend! It’s not some bland BBQ joint, it is very flavorful and exceeded my expectations. I didn’t even want to go, my husband did. Now I will happily drive the 45 mins just to eat here. I think it’s a hidden gem! The drink was delicious also! I think it was called piggy punch. We had friend pickles for appetizer, and I’ve never had them diced up and fried before, they were amazing also!

Let me start by saying we love Top Hog for lunch and dinner and were excited by the prospect of brunch because although it is a 40 minute trip it is closer than our favorite brunch place 2 and a half hours away. So after seeing the sign about brunch while driving by we checked the web page for details. Brunch was set to start at 9 according to the website. My second visit to Top Hog. On my first visit, I had pulled pork. It was quite good and while it was said to me this is best NC BBQ sauce, it’s not NC; it is good but not Eastern or Lexington BBQ. Tonight, I had the brisket. The sauce with it was a little sweet and very good on the meat. It’s served on the side so you can add as much or little as you like. Both times I’ve had slaw that is fresh and has a little bit of finely chopped dark green leafy veggie in it, probably the best slaw I’ve had in a while (I love slaw!). I really like venues with live music and often that is why I’ll go to a specific spot. The “music” being played this evening is why I left, it was less than appealing.

I thought that this was a unique Cuban sandwich and it was loaded with meat. Oh, so good! But, I’d come back just for the bread pudding. Yum yum yum! The sweet tea is also great! It was a very good experience.

How have I never seen this place before? I swear I’ve never seen the sign. There weren’t many people there. A few at the bar. We were seated immediately and got drink right away. The ice is like sonic ice and the tea is really good. We ordered okra for an appetizer and it came out super quick. Tasty and hot. I ordered the pulled mushroom sandwich which I had never imagined before. It was delish. The fries were great. Hubby got the steak salad with a side of pulled pork. Food came out hot and fast. Friendly service and we will definitely be back. The food is really good and lots to choose from on the menu!
