Hands down the best place in the Twin Cities to get a reliably amazing meal. Each time we go to Cheng Heng my partner and I try a new dish, and each time we are amazed at how genuinely flavorful and delicious that new dish has been. Go to this restaurant if you want to have a great meal.

To say that this restaurant is one of my favorites is a gross understatement. Not only do I often visit here for some affordable and delicious meals, but also I bring my friends from out of town to this place because finding a Cambodian restaurant anywhere in the United States is a rarity, and Cheng Heng simply does it way too well. The place is located on University Avenue in Saint Paul, which is a place where lots of local businesses are located at, so one can easily visit this restaurant when shopping for anything in the area. It seems like it is family owned, as I have been able to converse with one of the owners who happen to speak Mandarin Chinese. The main strength for this place, above all else, is food taste, which is single-handedly the reason why this place earns a 5 in my book. I have ordered many different dishes already, and so far every single one of them has been a hit. Some of the specific ones I recommend are: #14 Papaya Salad, #17 Chha Kroeng, #22 Banh Xiung, #26B Roast Chicken Over Rice, #38 Kor Koo Noodle Soup, #44 Tam Yam, #45 Machu Kroeng, #46 Machu Angkor, #47A Beef Saramann, #51 Stir-Fried Broccoli, and the dessert sweet rice soup. You do not have to order these specific items, but if you do, you will be very satisfied. If you choose to order other items, I am sure you will be satisfied as well! This is easily a top place that I will happily bring anyone to because of their food quality, cuisine rarity, small business atmosphere, and courteous services. If you are looking for somewhere fancy and clean, then this may not be the place, but this is when I proactively choose to shift focus to Cheng Heng’s strengths, and that is why I highly recommend this establishment.

Not a fan (dislike sweet pho broths) and only ever here out of compromise. That said, least portions got bigger? Could be wrong. Here’s pho, orig and souped up version. Pork salad not bad.

We weren’t totally sure what to pick so we ended up picking three items that were recognized in the menu description as notable from various awards or other media reviews. We cleaned our plates! Everything was super delicious. We would definitely go again!

All these three star reviews are probably people trying to get Vietnamese food or something. I’m probably projecting most Vietnamese places close at 8:30. So they go to this CAMBODIAN restaurant and complain that their pho is not that great. Dude, try number 38. It’s the soup in the pick. And it comes out like that. It’s a little spicy, but holy smokes. It is good. Get the owners/servers to recommend dishes for you. The fried rice i didn’t really try. They put sweet basil in it. The entree is #17. I was too busy eating that to pay attention to the fried rice. The prices here are quite a bit lower than most Vietnamese restaurants. I remember when Vietnamese food was niche. But try that number 38, cheaper than pho by $3-$4 and worth as much as any. Don’t go to a French restaurant and order Italian is my point. Besides, if you like your pho on the sweeter side, Cambodian palate is on the sweeter side.

We always order #64 Fish Black Mushroom when we go here. It’s made fresh, never soggy fish. The sauce is amazing as well.
