Adventures In South Jersey
On a cold and rainy night in March, my wife and I had an adventure at the historic Chesterfield Inn. Built in 1710 its the oldest continuously running tavern in New Jersey! The village of Recklesstown was developed around the intersection of 3 colonial roads and was named for one of its founders, Joseph Reckless, not because of anyone’s unruly behavior. The Recklesstown Tavern was also a stagecoach stop and a brothel. It was and still is the center of the village but in 1888 Congressman Anthony Bullock changed the town’s name to Chesterfield to avoid criticism. Their slogans say it best, for “300 Years and Counting” the Chesterfield Inn has been providing their patrons with “Fine Foods and Spirits Since 1710.” As soon as we walked in we could tell that this is a popular gathering place for the locals and we loved the inviting atmosphere! If you’re going during peak hours on the weekend, I recommend making a reservation like we did. We started off with the Desperado IPA from Screamin Hill, a local brewery in Cream Ridge. Then we tried the corn beef and cabbage egg rolls. They were a St Pattys Day special, sorry I’m a little behind on cataloging our adventures. For the main course we had the Tavern’s Own Ribeye Sandwich, which was served on garlic bread and it was delicious. The highlights of our adventure were the hometown atmosphere and being immersed in over 300 years of history! If you’re looking for great food, a fun crowd, and some interesting history, head on over to the Chesterfield Inn!

The wife and I like to try new places frequently. She recommended this one for a late lunch. We both were not very hungry until we sat down and smelled the aroma coming from the kitchen. Be ready for big portions and amazing tainting food. I had picked up the sliders with the ultimate appetizers platter. Oh boy, it was a lot of food and so good. I would highly recommend this place. Especially if you’re within the local area!

this place is amazing. The food is outstanding perfect for a date night in the back dining area or a great spot to grab a drink and food with friends. The service is top knotch. The atmosphere is awesome. If you like to dance Thursday Fri and Sat nights this is the place to be. overall great place great food and great times.

We were a fairly large party that walked in. (I think 10 of us) Even without a reservation we were seated quickly. Our waitress was amazing. The food was very good. 5 out 5, recommend.

If you want beer as warm as it was in 1710, soggy fish and slow service, this is your place. The waiter complained about splitting the check (while he messed the check up) and then came back to the table to complain about the tip he received from the group. I can’t give a negative star so it’s a 1.

Food was great, huge portions! Everything was delicious. I had Chicken Parmesan, my husband had a Roast Beef sandwich on a torpedo roll. Both were excellent. Our server, Liz, was outstanding! We will return, and when we do, I hope we get her again.

Food was pretty good but waiting 2 hrs for our meals was not acceptable. The manager did take off 2 meals off the check, but my father had lost his appetite, and my 7 year old was crying all before the food came. This was with a reservation.
