I embarked on an unexpected gastronomic journey with a group of friends on a late Wednesday evening at Frontier by Alamo in Church Hill. Despite it being close to closing time, we were graciously accommodated – a testament to their commendable service.

Chile rellenos batter is too thick. The pork belly special with cheesy grits somehow manages to use all the spices, including what seems to be chili crisp yet remains shockingly bland. Nachos were the saving grace. Service staff is very sweet.

This place was a wonderful surprise! Great service, warm and welcoming (the AC works great, not that kinda warm ), and good food / drinks! Frontier by Alamo is going on my, “good food in RVA” list and I’m excited to bring friends and family to this hidden honey hole!

Can’t wait for the “real” Alamo to re-open!! Frontier has a nice bar and decent food but the original walk-up with outdoor seating is my fav…. Ribs were very good as was the Black Beans and Rice. Mac and Cheese was better than most.

Like this place so much, I came back twice in two nights. Even though it’s a bbq place they have great vegetarian options, like the fried chile relleno, nachos with portobello shrooms, Texas caviar and jalenpeno mac and cheese. Servings are big enough to share, staff is attentive and chill, kitchen immaculate. The Grateful Dead was the soundtrack both evenings and the quality, service, and atmosphere are solid and consistent. The taxidermy Bear is the pièce de résistance

We had the three meat platter and half rack of ribs and were very impressed! The collards are the best I’ve had, the cornbread is amazing and the yams are sweet in all the right ways. It feels like there’s a lot of love put in to this food – we loved everything we got and the portions and prices were extremely reasonable. Patrick took great care of us at the bar and made delicious cocktails. We’ll be back to try the brunch and for dinner again soon!

Comfortable, neighborhood bistro/bar. Barbecue, Mexican dishes and surprises like the grilled watermelon topped with chili powder and pistachio that I enjoyed on a hot summer evening.

Best steak frites I’ve had in Richmond. Great casual spot for dinner and drinks, the bbq is also solid but I’d recommend the tex mex dinner specials – the stuffed peppers, half chicken, and steak frites are all standouts!

Went to Frontier by Alamo with my son and husband to celebrate mother’s day. It was our first time eating there. We got the BBQ nachos for an appetizer (AMAZING). My son got the burger and my husband got the pulled pork sandwich. I ordered the half rack of ribs. I’ve had ribs at maybe 20 different restaurants and I’ve never been completely turned off by ribs before. I don’t know how to describe it. These ribs were so smoky and mesquite, that neither me or my husband could eat them. Am I living in an alternate reality? The table behind me got the ribs and they seemed very happy with the taste. My son tried a bite and wanted to spit it out. Maybe I’m crazy. Great restaurant, fantastic service. Everything else was perfect. But those ribs were not enjoyable at all. I had to throw them away…
