I am utterly disappointed with the food and experience at Omakase Takeya. In addition to having really really bad food poisoning (which was unfortunate because it was our anniversary dinner), the food, atmosphere, and service were not worth the price. In case if other people are considering dining here, just be aware of some of the following points —

Our first Omakase experience leaned more towards traditional, and overall was incredible.

Food tasted good but now have raging sharp stomach pains. Both my wife and I are experiencing it. We suspect it was the uni as we saw that an older tray was used that had some leftover before the chef opened a new one. We’re sure we got the one from the old tray as we know in what order he serves what he makes. It was a wonderful experience, just ruined afterwards. Was expecting fresh sushi for the price.

This is our first time trying Omakase Takeya. We had to move our reservation and the restaurant was really nice and friendly about it. The nigiri are all in great quality but I heard that they used to have much more variety? And the nigiri are all served in a really fast paced! They say the dinner is served in 75min but I’m pretty sure we finished everything and got our check and sign with in 60min. But still, understandable for the covid situation, will want to come back again when they are back to normal menu.

I was a little worried after reading some of the reviews but my family and I had a great experience. Omakase translates to “dishes selected by the chef,” so there are no reasons for people to leave negative reviews about the nigiri selections. Everything tasted very fresh and delicious. The dinner seating lasts for 75 minutes, we got through the 15 courses in about 50 minutes. Afterwards, they allowed extra time for customers to re-order any of the pieces that were served. I did not feel rushed at any moment, in fact, the waiter encouraged us to stay and enjoy until the whole 75 minutes were up. The only complaint I have are the chairs, they are due to get new chairs as the seats were slightly uncomfortable.

Good and service were ok but not at the level of an exceptional omakase experience.

I came here a year ago for my two year anniversary with my bf and I AM SO SAD TO SEE THIS IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED!!! This omakase experience was so memorable- the chef was the cutest elderly man and each piece of fish was so tasty. I’ve been a few omakase places in New York and Japan and this one definitely lives up to the standard.

Overall very good omakase in Chicago, but definitely not comparable to those I’ve had in New York.

Reasonable pricing for getting these fresh materials in Chicago and serving premium Omakase. However, the courses were too singular that had no other dishes. Also, the add-on price for specific item is too expensive comparing with the price of the overall course. Worth a try for omakase lover, but no need for revisit if the menu remains same.

Can’t be it’s price point here, definitely worth every dollar to get your fill of variety of fresh fish. Would definitely recommend.
